Integrated Pest Management of
the Glassy-winged Sharpshooter and the Diseases it Transmits
Welcome
to the homepage of the University of California Division of Agricultural
and Natural Resources (UC DANR) workgroup for the Integrated Pest Management
of Glassy-winged Sharpshooters and the Diseases They Vector. On this web
site you will find a wealth of information detailing resources available
to help identify, manage and control Pierce's disease and glassy-winged
sharpshooters.
All of the webpages
are available for viewing, but please note that certain pages are only
relevant
to workgroup members and not to the public in general. You may access all
of these areas by simply clicking on a menu item on the left of the screen.
Below you will find
the overall objectives and goals of the workgroup
and our current list of funded activities.
Workgroup
Objectives
The primary objective of this UC-DANR
workgroup is to organize and bring DANR expertise and resources to bear on the
very real and immediate threat to California's agricultural systems by the glassy-winged
sharpshooter and the Xylella diseases it vectors. This is necessarily
a long-term, multidisciplinary, multi-campus effort that involves University
scientists and advisors as well and contributions from CDFA, USDA, and the private
sector.
Ongoing goals of the workgroup related
to our objective are:
- To continually assess UC,
statewide, and national expertise and resources (including non-DANR personnel)
that are available and willing to devote efforts towards the research, management,
and control of glassy-winged sharpshooters and the diseases they vector,
- To develop a research agenda
that prioritizes the many areas of research that are potentially required
for a successful IPM program,
- To stimulate the generation
of proposals and request funding that targets the prioritized research
agenda. Potential funding sources for projects developed within the workgroup
framework include traditional commodity support in a wide variety of systems,
DANR itself, UC-IPM, CDFA, USDA, EPA, NSF, and a large and growing list of
Counties that are or could be significantly impacted., and
- To assist UC personnel in training
and outreach activities related to sharpshooters and Xylella diseases.
Workgroup
Activities
For the 2000-2001 fiscal year, we
have received UC-DANR funding to support four activities
- Host an annual meeting
(November, 2000) at which
workgroup members are presented an
update of the current sharpshooter/Xylella situation. At this meeting
research and extension priorities are evaluated and set for the following year.
- Laboratory diagnostic analysis
for Pierce's Disease for farm advisors and related extension personnel. This
diagnostic support is to be used for self-training of advisors with regard
to the visual symptoms of Pierce's Disease and to identify and verify potential
areas of disease outbreak early in the process.
- Travel costs to support UC-DANR
internal training and outreach activities of farm advisors and extension
personnel. These funds are to be used for primarily for advisors to travel
to areas currently undergoing outbreaks of Pierce's Disease in order to familiarize
themselves with disease symptoms, rapidity of disease spread, and the vectors
associated with disease spread
- Administrative support
for database development, management, and extension of University (and where
possible CDFA) GWSS and Pierce's Disease data, maps, flyers, notifications,
etc.
The activities and role of the workgroup
will ultimately assist in the coordination and implementation of a statewide
IPM program for the control of this insect-disease complex.
