GWSS Workgroup Listserver

The Glassy-winged sharpshooter workgroup maintains an e-mail listserver at the University of California, Riverside. The listserver is only for the use of workgroup members and is the prime mechanism by which information regarding sharpshooters and Xylella diseases is disseminated to all members of the workgroup. Use of the listserver by unauthorized users will result in a "non-delivery" error message to the sender; the workgroup as a whole cannot receive email from non-workgroup members. If you wish to contact specific workgroup members, please refer to the Workgroup Directory section of this website for that member's contact information.

If you are already a workgroup member, you are already subscribed to the listserver. If by some chance you feel you are not subscribed to the listserver and should be (i.e. you have not seen a message from anyone in the workgroup for several months), please contact the list server manager, Rick Redak, at richard.redak@ucr.edu or 951-827-7250.

Workgroup members are free to use the listserver to transmit information about sharpshooters and Xylella diseases and other related items to the entire workgroup. To send a message to the workgroup simply send it to

gwss_workgroup@lists.ucr.edu

Please refer to the Workgroup Directory to see to whom you are sending messages. Keep in mind there are no secrets here. If you send a message to the group, everybody will get it. If you want confidentiality, you may ask for it, but be aware there are no guarantees (you are asking over 100 people to keep a secret). If you receive a message from the GWSS workgroup and you reply to that message, you are replying to the entire workgroup. E-mail addresses for each workgroup member can be found in the Workgroup Directory. Feel free to use them for "one-on-one" email.

Authorization and Reimbursement for Diagnostic Support.

This workgroup provides support to County CE personnel for the diagnosis of Pierce's Disease and Almond Leaf Scorch. Only those CE advisors and specialists that are workgroup members can qualify for this support. For the fiscal year 2001-2002, participating CE personnel can request funds to cover the costs of up to 25 diagnostic samples. Please follow the following procedures to receive authorization for diagnostic support. Contact the current workgroup chair (Lucia Varela at lgvarela@ucdavis.edu or 707-565-2621) to get prior approval. If you have not gone over your 25 sample allotment, you will be approved with no questions asked. Let the workgroup chair know how many samples you want (up to 25). You will get approval no matter what as long as your cumulative sample number is under 25 samples. Requesting over 25 samples is possible, but requires the workgroup chair to fiddle around with budgets. This is usually not a problem, and if we need more funding for this activity, we have been encouraged to seek it from the Vice President's office. In the mean time, the workgroup chair must track the funds and maintain somewhat of a budget. Consequently, prior approval always is needed, otherwise you are on your own for paying for diagnostic support.

Instructions for Processing Pierce's Disease/Almond Leaf Scorch Samples

Collect and prepare your samples during late summer when plants are symptomatic. Sample only plants that you feel are symtomatic of Pierce's disease or almond leaf scorch. Do this sometime between Friday through Monday. You need to collect samples such that you can mail them on Monday or Tuesday. This will save us a huge amount of money in set up costs and get us a nice price break on sample charges. If you can do this, it will mean we will have a budget to handle more samples. Samples submitted should be SYMPTOMATIC LEAVES WITH THE PETIOLES ATTACHED. Five or six leaves per individual plant should be collected and put into a 1 gallon freezer grade zip-loc bag, some air left in the bag (NOT squashed flat), and put into an ice chest (in the field) after collection. Samples should be kept refrigerated until shipped as an overnight package (FedEx, UPS, USPO Priority Mail all OK). If the samples are kept chilled until shipping late in the day and are sent as an overnight, they should be fine and not require any ice or frozen blue-ice in the package. So to review...batch your samples once per week and mail them out on Mondays (Tuesday at the latest).

Code your samples with a 4 letter-4 number code. Use your the first letter of your first name and the first 3 letters of your last name for the letter portion of the code (you can use another coding system but make sure it is simple and doesn't overlap with anybody else). Use what ever numbers you want but it is suggested that you keep things sequential. For example if William Peacock sends in 10 samples next week they would be labeled WPEA-0001 through WPEA-0010. The following week, Bill would label samples beginning with WPEA-0011. This labeling scheme keeps life simple for Agri-Analysis; they don't want to know or care to know stuff about growers, fields, etc. They just need a simple ID mechanism to identify a sample with a contact person. It is your (the person sending in the sample) responsibility to keep track of what sample is from what grower, field, etc. You are simply going to get back the results based on each sample number. Keep track of your sample id numbers!!!

Include in each batch of samples a list of what you are sending (A list of all samples, your name, address, phone, date, etc). Be sure each individual sample is also clearly labeled. Be aware that indelible ink on a zip lock can rub/scratch off. Write on the bag and include a label of some sort as well. Finally send an email duplicate of your list of samples to agrialys@yvm.net (attention Glenn Friebertshauser). In your email include your list of samples and your name, address, your email address, and phone number. Agri-Analysis WILL REPORT YOUR DATA BACK TO YOU BY E-MAIL (so be sure to give them your email and your list of samples). They will send you an invoice by regular mail.

Send your samples to Agri-Analysis. Send your samples on Monday (Tuesday at the latest). Use FedEx, UPS, or USPO Priority Mail; they all work OK. Mail your samples to

Agri-Analysis Assoc.
45133 Co. Rd. 32B,
P.O. Box 285,
Davis, CA 95617

If you need to call them, their number is 530-757-4656; their fax is 530-757-4655. Ask for Glenn. Batching samples and sending on Monday, lets Agri-Analysis run all of the UC samples once per week.

Payment. Agri-Analysis is going to send you your particular invoice (due in 30 days). They are not going to send them to the workgroup chair. You are responsible for getting those invoices paid. Once you get the invoice, you then forward it to Doris McCarty (email at Doris.McCarty@ucop.edu) in Oakland. Her address is

Doris McCarty
UC-DANR,
1111 Franklin St. 6th Floor,
Oakland, CA 94607.

Her phone number is 510-987-0697. The workgroup chair will authorize Doris to pay your invoice as soon as you tell the chair that you want to take samples. If you don't check with the workgroup chair first, Doris will not pay the invoice, and you will be responsible for paying the bill directly.

Authorization and Reimbursement for Advisor-based Activities

The workgroup currently has very limited funds available for internal training and support for CE Farm Advisor and Specialist activities related to glassy-winged sharpshooters and the diseases they vector. Only those CE advisors and specialists that are workgroup members can qualify for this support. Funds may be requested for travel expenses related to internal training with respect to sharpshooter and disease issues. This inlcudes

  1. travel to currently infested areas of the state to examine sharpshooter and disease damage
  2. travel to workshops and scientific meetings to learn about current sharpshooter and disease issues
  3. funds for the creation costs of outreach materials that are of value statewide (e.g. U.C. Glassy-winged sharpshooter brochure). In no case will funds be authorized for normal or local farm advisor activities (e.g. county-based newsletters, flyers, etc.)

Please follow the following procedures to receive authorization for diagnostic support. In all cases prior written approval from the workgroup chair (Lucia Varela at lgvarela@ucdavis.edu) must be obtained before committments can be made. In the case of items 1 and 2 above, you will be required to submit in writing (email is OK) the following information to the workgroup chair:

In the case of item 3 above, you will be required to submit in writing (email is OK) the following information to the workgroup chair:

After evaluating your request, the workgroup chair will notify you in writing of the approval or denial of your request. If you are approved, go forward with your request. Save all invoices and receipts. You are responsible for getting those invoices paid. Once you receive an invoice, you must forward it to Doris McCarty (e-mail at Doris.McCarty@ucop.edu) in Oakland for payment. Her address is

Doris McCarty
UC-DANR, for payment
1111 Franklin St. 6th Floor,
Oakland, CA 94607.

Her phone number is 510-987-0697. Doris will be authorized to pay your invoices at the same time as you are authorized to go forward with your request. Consequently, if you first do not receive authorization from the workgroup chair, Doris will not pay the invoice, and you will be responsible for paying all relateds bills directly.
